In folklore, stories of mysterious floating orbs or wisp like creatures have been told all around the world.
The Will-o’-the-Wisp, The Ellylldan, Jack-o’-Lantern, Ghost lights, Aleya, Wanderlight, Hitodama, Min Min lights, and Feu follet are just a few of the names that these similar apparitions go by.
With behavior’s ranging anywhere from mischievous to malevolent its most often said that these creatures take pleasure in leading you into dangerous situations. We have all heard variations of stories about travelers becoming lost or never being seen again after following mysterious lights.
A will-o-the wisp is described as resembling a flickering lamp and if approached, it will recede, drawing travelers away from safe paths. With a tendency to act like living beings, it’s a common theme that these lights are said to be the work of evil spirits, souls of the dead or fairies dancing in the night.
For the most part these strange light phenomena are seen as evil trickster figures to be feared and avoided. However in some northern and central European cultures these lights are said to reveal where a thief or fairy has buried a treasure.
Often truth is hidden in legend. We all fear becoming lost, deception, and death.
Some of these tales were probably started as warnings, to teach us to be careful and to not chase goals that are impossible to reach. Many refer to places that are quit dangerous. Bogs, moors, and marshy lands can be filled with poisonous plants and unstable ground, they are not places you want to find yourself lost in at night.
There really are strange lights in swamps and forests…
The scientific explanation for this phenomena is that the wispy lights are caused by burning “swamp gas” or “marsh gas” that develops from the breakdown of organic matter in persistently wet areas. which explains why these stories are so prevalent in places with many marshes, bogs and moors.
Ghost lights are one of the most common paranormal phenomena in forests. Many of these reports don’t fit the above scientific explanation. Instead, its suggested that the culprit may be a rare phenomenon known as ball lightning.
Ball lightning is usually seen during thunderstorms as a ball of light about the size of a grapefruit and moving at walking speed. This phenomena lasts only seconds but can be formed inside closed rooms, move through glass plates and is even said to produce odors and sound.
According to Researchers from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China in a research paper published in Scientific Reports. -“At the tip of a lightning stroke reaching the ground, a relativistic electron bunch can be produced, which in turn excites intense microwave radiation. The latter ionizes the local air and the radiation pressure evacuates the resulting plasma, forming a spherical plasma bubble that stably traps the radiation.”
In 1993 Professors Persinger and Derr proposed another theory, that the lights were merely an outcome of geological activities, stating that the lights were piezoelectrically produced due to tectonic strains. According to them, when faults move because of the strains, the rocks are heated up and the water is vaporized. Arsenic, silicon or quartz (piezoelectric) found in rocks generate electricity when the faults moved. The electricity then moves up along with vaporized water columns and appear as lights. According to the professors, the lights therefore are seemingly intelligent with erratic and electrical appearance.
These and other down to earth theories have not dispelled the belief that the majority of such lights have far weirder origins.
One other explanation, associated with the realm of the dead in many stories, suggest that these apparitions appear in zones where our dimension overlaps.

Wisps in The Blood Inheritance Quartet
In Rise both Amanda and Emily encounter illuminated wisp like creatures during their separate imprisonments.
Although the exact nature of the wisps is not revealed to Amanda, during her time in the sorcerers dungeon she is quick to accept their help. Why wouldn’t she? They certainly seem harmless enough.
For Emily the wisps brief appearance seems to comfort her in her time of need, but you will see that relationship evolve further in Lost…
To avoid spoilers I will only say that Kiami, whom is introduced in Lost has a much different idea about the nature of the wisps and it will take more than a little convincing for her to accept their presence.
