It’s that time of the year!
Pull out your creepiest decorations and your spooky masks! In this creativity post, I will share some Halloween themed ideas, information, and a new creative project tutorial for the season. I love the fall and Halloween is probably my favorite holiday. Its true that it may look a little different for every one of us this year, but that doesn’t mean we cant celebrate at all.
I plan on decorating, carving pumpkins, watching scary movies, and reading some spine tingling tales. In fact, I have already started working on some new projects – I used the technique from the dismembered body parts craft that I shared in last years “October” post: Book Charms and Updates, to make some smaller skeletons look more convincing. I picked them up from the local dollar store. I think they turned out pretty gross, which is perfect for the small cemetery I am putting together in my yard this year.

To help get you, and your entire family in the mood for a wicked and fun Halloween, I have added some links for inspiration. You can read some interesting articles on the history of the holiday here: history.com and here: trick-or-treat-history. View the word Halloween in the online Entomology dictionary here: Halloween. Find cool Jack-O-Lantern Ideas here: insider.com and some tasty Halloween treats here: countryliving.com. There is also a list of some great movies for the season here: purewow.com.
As I am sure you know, there is a ton of folklore and a lot of superstitions that surround this time of year, but just like everything else in 2020, this Halloween gets a little extra something because there will be two full moons this month. The full Harvest Moon on October 1st and the full Hunter’s Moon on the 31st.
You can learn more about about these two full moons here: almanac.com
The second full moon within a calendar month is called a blue moon. By this definition the last blue moon occurred on March 31st 2018. A full moon can also be considered a blue moon if its the third of four full moons in a single season between a solstice and equinox. (typically only three would occur)By this definition, the next seasonal Blue Moon will be August 22, 2021 and the last one was on May 18th, 2019.
I hope that I have succeeded in getting you in the mood for some fall fun. Below I have created a tutorial for a spider egg sac decoration. Years ago I made something similar for a Halloween party that we hosted. It is relatively simple to make and looks pretty creepy, which is why I thought it would be great for this post.
How to Make a Spider Egg Sac Decoration for Halloween:
Blow up balloons – Grab some balloons and blow a few up to get started.
Mix white glue with water in equal parts – Use equal parts of white glue and water. Mix them together to make a watered-down glue solution..
Add yarn to the glue solution – Place the white yarn into the glue solution to soak. I cut my yarn into six foot pieces to reduce tangles. You can also leave one end of the yarn on the side of the bowl so its easier to find it when you are ready to go on to the next step.
Wrap balloons with yarn – Next, wrap each balloon with yarn to make spider eggs. Do your best to wind the yarn and wrap it around and around in several directions to create a spider egg.
Allow Spider Egg Decoration to Dry – The yarn will be hard when it’s dry. Tie a piece of fishing line or yarn around the knot on the balloon so that you can hang it to dry. It took about 36 hours for all of them to dry completely.
Pop your balloons and remove them from the inside of the spider egg craft – Use a pair of scissors or a needle to pop the balloon inside each spider egg and gently pull it out from the inside of the craft.
Tie a piece of fishing line to the spider egg sac. – Cut off a section of fishing line to the desired length for hanging and try it to the egg sac.
Decorate Egg Sacs with plastic spiders – add plastic spiders to your egg sacs to decorate them. You could also add small string lights or pieces of store bought spiderweb to obtain a different look.
Hang spider egg sac Halloween decoration – Decorate your home with these spider egg sacs for Halloween.
I hope that you all have a safe and happy Halloween!
