Creating Myth Quotes
from the mind of Chaos’s lonely daughter
and the sun fell heavy and thick
to warm the blood of a world
not quite ready to live
but so tired of its own imagination” -Tamara Rendell,
About the ambitious pursuit of knowledge, alluding to Icarus of the Greek myth. – Edward O. Wilson
Definition of a creation myth:
Noun (plural creation myths) “A symbolic account of the creation of the world / universe in a particular culture; often involving a creator deity” –www.yourdictionary.com
“A symbolic narrative of the beginning of the world as understood in a particular tradition and community. Creation myths are of central importance for the valuation of the world, for the orientation of humans in the universe, and for the basic patterns of life and culture.” – Wikipedia.org
Crafting the creation myth
The world of Sumir on which the Blood inheritance quartet takes place is a fantasy world. A world I designed from scratch. Although it is true that it has similarities to our world at its core, this coincidence is explained during one of the reiterations of the creation myth early on and also gives a hint at whats to come. Small details like that work to reinforce the credibility of the myth, otherwise the fact that the planet is like earth in many ways, would be too much of a coincidence.
Creating A Myth:
With a world’s creation comes myths. Every culture has them, its only right that the fictional world of Sumir has them as well. Getting down to it, I knew that I wanted the myths of Sumir to sound like a legend that you would find in any current mythology book, so I read and listened to all the myths I could along the way and I noticed many of the creation myths that I read, held some similarities.
I am a plantser when I am writing. A planster is a combination of pantser (someone that writes by the seat of their pants) and a planner (methodical writer from start to finish). I prefer writing by the seat of my pants but when you are dealing with a series, it gets harder to do that with each book. You need to plan, at the very least for consistency.
When I was working out the details of the creation myth for the blood inheritance quartet, in my head the backstory seemed plausible, but I knew it wouldn’t be enough to say that the three daughters created the world, I needed specifics in order to decide how best to relay the imformation.
When I decided that I wanted my creation myth to sound authentic, remain engaging, and blend in seamlessly with the current timeline, I devised a plan.
The three sisters created the world but who are they? Were they instructed to do so, and why would that be? I had to go deeper. I had to ask important questions, like where did the celestial beings come from and for what purpose.
These questions needed answers that could be securely implied or stated right out and there had to be a good reason for these celestial beings to create a new world. Every detail no matter how small, needed a reason. There could be no random spurts of information.
The creation myth of Sumir plays a central roll in the stories, as such it is an integral piece of the world. It first appears in a book Amanda reads and then again later when Emily encounters a painted version of events, on the walls hidden bellow the books store.
Sumir, you learn later on is what the ancient ancestors call the planet that the blood inheritance novels take place in. It is mentioned in Lost and will come up again early on in Endow to remind readers how the world came about.
As with any story, as time goes on the myth grows with the people. You learn in Endow what happens after the Jinn escaped their village with a another legend that ties in directly to the world creation myth.
In my books “Rise“, “Lost“, and “Endow“, you encounter many mythological creatures such as the ones I have blogged about here in the past like: Dragons, Wisps, and Unicorns. These are familiar subjects to most, but also have an unusual twist or spin that relate to what is happening to some extent, in the fantasy world of Sumir
The facts about the less familiar creatures that continue to pop up in the books, like the grindylow, fizzle the friendly monster, and the rock creatures , are no less or more important to the story line, as the teens are thrust expectantly from realm to realm. That being said, inspiration for the monsters that keep invading their lives was taken from many cultures around the world, but when they are incorporated into the story it has to make sense. These creatures often tie into the world mytholgy becuase, there needs to be a solid reason for them to exist and behave the way they do. The details are important in order to understand how the world of Sumir thrives.
If you visit the previous posts, you will find out interesting fact about these creatures from history and learn more about the unique qualities of the similar creatures in my books.
Creating a believable world mythology was important to solidify the story and to backup the existence of these strange creatures. You hear snippets of a few myths and legends in the first few books, but I feel that the most important is the creation myth because it is that story that ignites the teens actions on more than one occasion.
Creation Myth – Sumir
If you would like to read one of the variations of the creation myth from the blood inheritance quartet, you can find my short story “Cultivating Wrath” on pg. 15 of the November issue of Inkandsword. Here is a link to the short story: https://inkandsword.wixsite.com/inkandsword/post/issue-7-november-2018
This short story version of the myth also links directly with the history of the Jinn which is furthur detailed in Endow.
Most of the names in the blood inheritance quartet have a meaning behind them in one culture or another that directly relates to their roll in the stories. So, if you ever reference them you are bound to get interesting bits of information.
